“What is a friend? A single soul dwelling in two bodies” - Aristotle

Friends come in all shapes and sizes. Fact.

According to Aristotle, there are Three Types of Friendships. These friendships types have evolved over the last couple of centuries and the friend dynamic has changed considerably... so I'll try to break them down and simplify the "types" as best I can.

  • Lets start with the social media friends; the ones you hide from in the supermarket because you're in your daggy tracksuit pants, stained t-shirt and hair up in some sort of ponytail (I know you know what I mean...we've all done it).

  • Next are the fair-weather friends; the ones who only pop up when you need to serve a purpose or it is convenient for them. But at the first sign of a problem, you don't see hide nor hair of them.

  • Honorary mention goes out to the friends you have made either or through school or work; you socialise with on a regular basis, but when life gets busy or you move away, you unfortunately lose contact.

  • Sadly, there's the friends that can be negative and weigh you down; but you still need obligated to maintain the friendship. As hard as it is, sometimes we NEED to cut ties with these friends as they don't encourage a positive friendship. Friends should build each other up, not tear each other down (you know, real queens straighten each others crowns kinda thing).

  • And now last, but certainly not least....your life long friends; bestfriends, besties, baes, BFF's, sister from another mister, soul sister? Whatever the term you want to use, we all have one....... that one particular person you connect with, and through thick and thin, are there for each other. You have each others backs (not to mention straighten above mentioned crowns).

When you think about it, there are billions of people on the planet and amongst all those people, there is ONE person who knows you deeply and completely (and sometimes better than yourself or even your family).

Best friends help us grow and change for the better, they support you in good times and bad. They can make you laugh when all you want to do is cry (sometimes the other way round). But, no matter how far apart you may be from one another, we always have the comfort in knowing that these best friends are still there for us, cheering us on and wishing only the best, because that is what true friends do for each other.

A strong friendship doesn’t need daily conversation, or to live in each other's pocket...as long as the relationship lives in the heart, true friends will never part! Pretty deep, huh!

I'll leave you with this thought, when I was 16, my parents gave me an autograph book for my birthday (yep, old school). My Dad was the first to write in my book and it as stuck with me, some 30 years on.

“True friends are like diamonds, precious and rare; false friends are like autumn leaves, found everywhere”.

If you have been lucky enough to find your “diamond” (like I have), cherish him or her as this friendship is truly unique and so, so special and should be celebrated.
