We are coming out of the closet… literally. The team at Phoenix have been running this small group program for young people that identify as LGBTIAQ+ for over nine months due to a gap in what we’ve seen locally, and what some of our clients have requested. Now we are at the stage where we are ready to invite non-clients to join in on our small social group, with the hope that we can continue to create a safe place within our community for our queer young people. Aimed at 16 years to 25 years, with the hope to split the group to 16-20 year olds and 20-25 year olds in the next few months, we invite you to fill out the form below with your details if you are interested in attending. Jules will be in contact to arrange an in person catch up to see if we are the right fit for you.

Some of the activities we have done previously include games and trivia nights, movie night, roller skating, and even the escape room, and are always looking for new ideas!

Every second Friday during NSW school term, 4pm-6pm at Phoenix Wing Wellness Albury, with an occasional outing, from the 25th October.

Cost: $30 per session. Both NDIS and non-NDIS participants welcome.

Attending an art therapy workshop focused on boundaries can be a powerful way for individuals to explore and express personal limits in a creative and non-verbal manner. Through artistic activities, participants can visually represent their emotions, experiences, and challenges related to setting and maintaining boundaries in relationships, work, or self-care. The process of creating art allows for deeper reflection, helping people to identify unclear or unhealthy boundaries they may not be fully conscious of. Furthermore, the collaborative nature of such workshops can foster a safe environment for participants to discuss their boundary-setting difficulties and gain new perspectives, all while enhancing their emotional resilience and self-awareness.

On Friday 22nd November (7pm-9pm), Phoenix Wings Wellness is offering an evening of creative expression for anyone who would like to learn how to put healthy boundaries into place.

Photography serves as a profound therapeutic tool, offering a multitude of benefits for mental and emotional well-being. Through the lens, individuals can capture moments of beauty, significance, and personal expression, fostering a sense of mindfulness and presence in the present moment.

Engaging in photography encourages individuals to explore their surroundings with heightened awareness, stimulating creativity and curiosity. The act of composing and framing images provides a sense of control and empowerment, allowing individuals to express their unique perspectives and emotions visually.

Photography can serve as a form of self-reflection and introspection, enabling individuals to gain insights into their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. As individuals document their lives through photographs, they often discover new perspectives, find solace in moments of joy and beauty, and develop a deeper appreciation for the world around them. Ultimately, photography as therapy offers a powerful means of self-expression, healing, and personal growth.

This program has been developed by Maree McFarlane, a mental health social worker, and is offered in a group setting or can be tailored to meet the needs of individuals. This program is not about taking beautiful pictures nor is it a photography course. All you need is a camera (or phone with a camera) and a desire to learn more about yourself.

Autistic Adults Social Circle - September 7th

Autistic Adults Social Circle - September 7th

Our history: Bree came to me back in November 2023 to discuss the idea of starting this group.

We’ve been able to work together with me supporting her in getting this up and running through two open table sessions where the local autistic community was invited to come along and share their ideas. As a result of this, Bree is ready to start this group to provide a space for autistic adults to come and be with others that are similar to her. Bree has said that after being diagnosed as autistic (we both use identity first language) last year, she was looking for social support groups but the closest ones were in Melbourne. She wants to be able to create healthy social situations for herself and other autistic people (with reduced need for support workers to be present) where they can feel free to be themselves and not mask.

During the open table sessions, we discussed the possibility of fortnightly circle meetings that would be at a range of locations across the border and north east Victoria, and at different days and times to suit a variety of people. Activities might include going to a cafe for a social catch up, or doing an arts and craft session at a local organisation. We are open to more ideas, please message us below.

We believe that self-diagnosis is valid, especially with the often prohibitive cost of assessments, so you don’t need a formal diagnosis to attend. Attendance is free for this event!

To RSVP, please fill out the form below. BYO drinks, a snack, and fidgets. I know this will be difficult for some of you to do, but we’ve totally got this. If you need to bring a support person, that is absolutely fine too. An email confirmation with a contact number will be sent to you a few days prior to the event, so you can message us if it’s too much, and you need someone to come walk with you from your transportation.

Phoenix Creative - Rage Writing - Albury

Phoenix Creative - Rage Writing - Albury

Rage writing can be a powerful outlet for expressing anger, offering numerous benefits beyond simply venting emotions. When channeled into writing, anger transforms into a creative force that allows individuals to explore and understand their emotions more deeply. This process often leads to a sense of catharsis and emotional release, as pent-up feelings find a constructive outlet. Moreover, creative writing encourages introspection and self-reflection, promoting personal growth and resilience in managing intense emotions.

Creative writing fosters empathy and connection. By articulating anger through letters, stories or poems, writers can connect with others who may have experienced similar emotions, creating a sense of solidarity and understanding. This shared experience can be therapeutic, validating one's feelings and reducing feelings of isolation. Furthermore, the creative process itself promotes mindfulness and relaxation, offering a meditative escape from the intensity of anger. Ultimately, creative writing not only helps individuals manage their emotions effectively but also cultivates empathy, resilience, and a deeper connection to oneself and others.

On Friday 30th August (7pm-9pm), Phoenix Wings Wellness is offering an evening of creative expression for anyone who would like to learn how to channel their anger and frustration into writing.

Investment: $30 per person, includes art materials and handout. Please bring your own snacks. Purchase your ticket below.

Cancelled due to illness - Autistic Adults Social Circle - August 3rd

Cancelled due to illness - Autistic Adults Social Circle - August 3rd

Phoenix Creative - Grief and Loss

Phoenix Creative - Grief and Loss

When grappling with grief and loss, creativity and expression serve as powerful tools for navigating the complex emotions that accompany these experiences. Artistic expression offers a safe space to channel feelings that may otherwise feel overwhelming or difficult to articulate. Whether through painting, writing, music, or other forms of creative outlet, individuals can externalize their inner turmoil, allowing for a sense of release and catharsis. By transforming pain into something tangible, creativity offers a means of processing grief in a way that feels authentic and healing.

Moreover, engaging in creative activities can foster a sense of connection and community during times of sorrow. Sharing artwork or personal expressions of grief can create bonds with others who are also navigating similar struggles. In this way, creativity becomes a bridge that connects individuals, providing solace and understanding in the midst of loss. Through collective expression, people find validation for their emotions and experiences, realizing that they are not alone in their journey through grief.

On Friday 2nd August, Phoenix Wings Wellness is offering an evening of creative expression for anyone who has experienced a grief event in their lives, ages 12 and up, including adults (we will have separate rooms for adults and young people). Join Mel, an experienced art therapist and social worker, to learn how we can use creativity in our lives to express and process grief. After Mel lost her 2 month old daughter from the complications of a genetic disorder, she found solace and relief in being creative (you can read more about it here). You'll need to bring some photos and/or items representative of the person or event that has caused the grief and loss. Grief and loss is not restricted to simply death, but could also be other significant events, such as house fire, debilitating illness, divorce/family breakdown.

Investment: $30 per person, includes art materials, and handout. Please bring your own snacks. Purchase your ticket below.

Every second Friday during NSW school term, 4pm-6pm at Phoenix Wing Wellness Albury, with an occasional outing, from the 2nd August.

Cost: $30 per session. Both NDIS and non-NDIS participants welcome.

Phoenix Play with Kristin Walsh (Term 3)

Welcome to the Phoenix Play therapy group program with certified LEGO social and therapy facilitator Kristin Walsh.

Neuroaffirming play therapy and social skills groups offer profound benefits for children, particularly those with neurodivergent conditions such as being autistic, or having ADHD, or sensory processing differences. These groups provide a structured yet flexible environment where children can engage in play-based activities specifically designed to enhance social skills. Through guided interactions and collaborative play, children learn essential skills such as turn-taking, sharing, and conflict resolution in a supportive setting. This approach not only builds confidence but also fosters empathy and understanding towards peers who may have different communication styles or sensory preferences. By accommodating diverse needs and promoting inclusivity, neuroaffirming play therapy groups help children develop a positive self-concept and a sense of belonging within their social circles.

Moreover, these groups facilitate tailored interventions that address each child's unique challenges and strengths. Trained therapists and facilitators utilise evidence-based strategies to teach social cues, emotional regulation techniques, and problem-solving skills through playful activities. This method not only makes learning enjoyable but also reinforces concepts in a way that resonates with the children's sensory and cognitive profiles. As children engage in cooperative play and structured social interactions, they gain valuable practice in navigating social norms and developing meaningful connections with peers. Over time, participation in neuroaffirming play therapy and social skills groups can lead to improved social competence, reduced anxiety in social settings, and enhanced overall well-being for children with neurodivergent conditions.

This group program uses principles from a widely accepted therapeutic intervention of using LEGO therapy games and activities, and is about building capacity, inclusivity, social connection, team work, communication, and using your imagination, in a sensory safe environment. Aimed at Grades 3-6, for 4 participants, please note this is a commitment for all 8 weekly sessions. Snacks included, please let us know of any dietary requirements. There will be take-home therapy at home activities for all participants.
